The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) was founded in 1976 to help address the needs of an ever-growing animal population. Originally, all animals were cared for in the homes of dedicated volunteers. In 1999 we moved into our current facility in Fort Mill, South Carolina, with the capacity to house over ninety cats and about fifty dogs. A small part-time staff, a director, and a group of wonderful volunteers keep the HSYC running. We have outgrown this facility, and look forward to a new beginning in a new building in 2011. Read the “Future Goals” section below to learn more about our exciting move.
The HSYC is a qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law and 100% of your donation remains with the HSYC. Your donation is especially important as we receive no funding from the city, county or state and we are not affiliated with or supported by the Humane Society of the United States, the ASPCA or any other animal welfare organization.
The future of the Humane Society of York County (HSYC) depends on the public. Please help us continue to “give abandoned animals a second chance.” There are several ways that you can help including monetary donations, supply donations and volunteering.

Robert G. Chappell, Veterinarian and President of the Board
Robbie donates much of his time to the shelter and provides all of the necessary medical services to support the shelter.
Kathy Sowell, Previous Shelter Director
Kathy now works with Dr. Chapell and continues to donate much time na dmedical expertise to help our animals.
Vickie Frain, Shelter Director
Vickie has been the Shelter Director of the HSYC since July 2008. She acts as the liason between the board, shelter, vet, volunteers and public. She also handles all of the daily operational functions at the shelter including supervising paid employees. She has been a volunteer at the shelter since 1997 and once served as the Assistant Director.
Mary Beth Knapp, Board Member and Volunteer
Elaine Siegel, Board Member and Volunteer
Debbie Kiggans, Board Member and Volunteer
Larry Morahan, Board Member and Volunteer
Virginia Capezio, Board Member and Volunteer
Morag Gearny, Board Member and Volunteer
Christie Jordan
Christie writes grants for the HSYC and successfully gained a $10,000 grant form the Turner Foundation in Charlotte for our spay and neuter clinic. She also serves as the vet/shelter liaison to schedule spay and neuter appointments for shelter animals. When needed, Christie helps at the PAWSibilities Thrift Shop and the HSYC events.
Mo Greaney
Mo manages the day-to-day operations of the PAWSibilities Thrift Shop. She trains and oversees a group of volunteers to keep the store ready for business every week.
All of the listed individuals (as well as many volunteers and staff members) do much more than is listed. Without our dedicated volunteers that support our limited number of paid part-time staff, the shelter would have great difficulty continuing to save abandoned animals in our area. We are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested, please visit the Volunteers page for more information.
